AP: Kaine Wins

Shortly after 9 p.m. the Associated Press reported: "Democrat Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine won the Virginia governor's race Tuesday, soundly defeating Republican Jerry Kilgore in a contest for a GOP-leaning state that was closely watched by political analysts for signs of the public's mood ahead of next year's midterm elections."

Thus, for the eighth time in a row Virginians have elected a governor from the opposite party from that which won the White House the year before. It goes back to 1977. For more on this year's numbers in the statewide races go here.

I was thinking about that 'opposite party' string last night but w/out realizing that it went back that far...
