How about we take a short break from worrying about which campaign -- Kaine's or Kilgore's -- has issued the more bogus dirty tricks handbills in the last few days and focus on yet another bubbling brouhaha. The cityscape picture above was snapped by yours truly on the afternoon of Jan. 13, 2005 at the corner of 7th and E. Broad Streets in Richmond, VA.
Now let's play a little game in which we select the best caption(s) to run under the photograph. Readers are invited to use the comments capability of this site (see the bottom of this post), or to send an email. (By the way, restaurant owners wondering what’s up with all that meal tax money that’s been fronted by us? are particularly encouraged to play the game.)
How would you best describe what the photo depicts?
A. It shows the VAPAF-ordered demolition of the old Thalhimers department store, leading to the area being labeled as that “hole in the ground.”
B. It shows taxpayers’ money being used to further a scam, leading to the area eventually coming to be referred to as the “scene of the crime.”
C. Substitute your caption that says it better.

Mayor L. Douglas Wilder was quoted today,"I don't know who they think they are fooling with but the people of Richmond will get every red cent back," as reconstruction began on the old Thalhimers department store.
"Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you’ve got
‘Til it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot"
