Groh's parting poem

Here's a bizarre twist to the postgame scene that followed the drubbing head coach Al Groh's Virginia Cavaliers absorbed from their arch-rival (Va. Tech 42, UVa 13) today at Scott Stadium. Virginia finished its season, losing six games in a row, to establish a 3-9 record for the season.

With many in Charlottesville saying Groh will soon be fired, he read a poem to his team in the locker room, then apparently walked out without further explanation.
When you get what you want in your struggle for self,
And the world makes you King for a day,
Then go to the mirror and look at yourself,
And see what that guy has to say.
For it isn’t your Father, or Mother, or Wife,
Who judgement upon you must pass.
The feller whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the guy staring back from the glass.
Huh?

Sounds like a frustrated Groh thinks he did his job ... but he was betrayed by bad luck or others not doing their job.

The Wahoos should toss in the towel with regard to "Big Time" Division I sports.

Most of us would be perfectly happy to see a Division III, non- scholarship program, where UVA could return to playing old rivals such as W&L, Hampden Sydney and Randy Mac.

I would be happy to again hear interviews with REAL student athletes, who could articulate the American language, as well as form a coherent thought, rather than the mumbling idiocy of the latest, "Watch us play" advertising campaign.

It is clear that neither Mr. Groh, nor the players gave a crap about the school that they were supposed to represent, but this dismal attitude was not limited to this current crop of steroid pumped, "athletes." Virginia has been in decline for years and a string of carpetbaggers who are supposed lead a bunch of non-Virginia imports who don the orange and blue, but lack any loyalty or even affection for Mr. Jefferson's school, or the real students.

The right answer or UVA is to chuck the whole Division I program and revert to Division III. This would be a first step toward restoring academic standards and placing sports in its proper place on the Charlottesville campus.
