Palin vs. Biden

The vice presidential debate went smoothly enough. No big gaffes. No big scores.

While Gov. Sarah Palin didn't worry about what the question was, she did a pretty good job of ducking them.

While Sen. Joe Biden didn't say much that was memorable, neither did he did say too much. Nonetheless, compared to his opponent, he was boring.

So, I have to say Palin won on style. Maybe Biden was better on substance. But in my instant take, while it was a almost a draw, I have to say Palin won the night. In a couple of days that analysis may look premature.

Still, I was surprised Palin did as well as she did. Mostly, Biden seemed to be trying to avoid a mistake -- in football, his tact would be called a "prevent defense."

She won by not losing. I think that's what we'll be hearing for the next week.

She beat the spread, for sure. (Expectations could not have been lower.) And I'm sure some people like Sarah's "by golly, gosh darn it" folksiness, but that act just makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

The real winners are gay and lesbian folk, for it is now a matter of public record that both a Republican and a Democrat are fully in support of equality short of actually calling it marriage... and that is a huge difference from any election before. It shows how much America has changed, not the either candidate actually believes it - but that they would at least pay lip service to is it amazing.

Uh - that there was no knock out blow? What did you expect, this is after all the BI-PARTISAN CPD, not an actual open and non-partisan debate moderating committee. It is in the interests of the CPD to keep this both close and exclude any third parties.
