Elephant Stampede

My quick-draw analysis of the election results is up at Richmond.com.
Former Attorney General Robert F. "Bob" McDonnell, a calm, hard-line conservative Republican from Virginia Beach, clobbered his earnest but vaguely moderate Democratic opponent from Bath County, state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds, by 18 percentage points.

After a bit of the dust has settled, I'm sure I'll have more to say about the way this year's voting went. In the meantime, we should gird ourselves to hear a thousand chattering Republicans say what happened in Virgina and New Jersey was mostly a referendum on Obama and congressional Democrats, in general. And, a thousand disappointed Democrats will say it wasn't, that the results were mostly based on issues and candidates in the two states.

With the damn Yankees poised to win the World Series and the way it's been going for the Redskins this season, watching the Democrats crash and burn yesterday wasn't fun.

Go Phillies!

Nice take on the race, I think low turnout is often the key to GOP victories. In the last gubernatorial in 2005 44% of eligible voters elected Kaine, although if that extra 4% all voted Deeds he still would have been pounded by McDonnell.

Deeds has proven to be the poster boy for why people shouldn't pick their candidates by using the beer test -- which guy would I rather have a beer with in a bar?

While Deeds might be the better happy hour guy, either of his two Northern Virginia opponents in the primary would probably have done better in the general election than did the man from Bath County.

That isn't to say McAuliffe or Moran would have won. We have to give the McDonnell camp its due, its man won this election every bit as much as Deeds lost it.
