Feb. 17: VA Top Five

Every Monday (this week Tuesday) during the college basketball regular season, SLANTblog offers its new Virginia Top Five. This feature ranks what seem at the moment to be the best five teams from among the 14 Division I men's programs in the Commonwealth.

SLANTblog's VA Top Five

1. Va. Tech (17-8, 6-4 in ACC, No. 49 RPI)
2. Mason (16-7, 10-5 in CAA, No. 57 RPI)
3. VCU (18-8, 11-4 in CAA, No. 67 RPI)
4. JMU (17-10, 9-6 in CAA, No. 121 RPI)
5. ODU (16-9, 9-6 in CAA, No. 136 RPI)

While UVa. (8-13, 2-8 in ACC) is at No. 90 in RPI the Cavaliers need to show us more to be considered here. In the meantime, this is a good example of how RPI is just one way of comparing teams ... not always the best way.
