VCU 73, Houston 72

Playing a rare morning game on Thursday the VCU Rams defeated the Houston Cougars in their first game of the Puerto Rico Tipoff tournament in San Juan. VCU’s freshman guard Joey Rodriguez hit two free throws with 10 seconds on the clock to provide the winning margin: VCU 73, Houston 72.

The Rams offense was paced by senior guard Jamal Shuler’s 20 points, who hit a key basket and made a foul shot to take a one-point lead 71-70 at the 1:06 mark of the second half. Senior forward Michael Anderson added 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Tomorrow (Friday) at 1:30 p.m. VCU (2-0), face Miami (2-0), which defeated Marist by a score of 85 to 61. In other action in San Juan, Temple will face Providence and Charleston will play Arkansas.
