I was pulled one night by 2 Richmond cops (brown uniform days) because my buddy was chugging a beer as we passed their cruiser. They made us dump the beer and sent us home without any supper. I remember going to the clubs back in the early 80's...the Bus stop, Jade Elephant, Newgate, Scotlands Yard, Poor Boys. I even went into Hububbas a few times. It was fun. Redneck bikers and punks and artzies and frat boys all managed to coexist with only the occasional fist fight to sour the mood.

Then the culture changed. Security guards getting shot at McDonalds. Random, pointless assaults. The cops out in force cracking down on the slightest infraction. The atmosphere of excitement was replaced with a persistant dread that violence was inevitable. Throw in the rise of our hyper sensitized, tribalized culture and...it's just not worth the trouble, or risk, anymore. Students hang out with friends. They don't risk going out to public venues as much because, unlike during my late teens and early 20's, they can't be sure they're not going to get beaten and robbed on the way back to their car or even shot dead over a piece of pizza.

All the shiny new buildings and reduced taxes in the world aren't going to help if people don't feel safe.pigeaterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15791473895323427195noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5640358.post-20191944486226160912009-11-11T16:47:58.464-05:002009-11-11T16:47:58.464-05:00Scott, this post wasn't about corporate welfar...Scott, this post wasn't about corporate welfare. If I went after all the stinkers out there, each time I get in a ranting mood, I don't think most of my readers would appreciate it.

This time I wanted to focus on the abuses of the ABC Board and the City's admissions tax, because I believe they both stem from the same warmed-over and flawed thinking.F.T.
